Everybody wants to be a Queen or King for a day, so it's time to kit everyone out with their own precious crown! Look on the web for some images to inspire them before you begin.

To measure your head, simply wrap a piece of Bordette around your head and get somebody to mark with a chalk where it meets (or just hold it with your finger!). Cut the Bordette. Then cut another strip the same length. You will need this for Step 3. Stick the two edges of your “circlet” or crown together with a piece of strong tape, such as masking or parcel tape, or glue it.

Now the sticking can begin! We’ve used sticky-backed jewels, foam mosaics and glitter to decorate this crown but you can use all sorts of things that you may have to hand. Coiled string painted gold with cotton wool balls with a black dot in the middle makes really effective imitation ermine!

Now it’s time to make the arches of the crown! Cut two strips measuring 1cm wide from the extra strip of Bordette which you cut in Step 1. Stick these to the inside of the Bordette band ensuring that they cross over each other at the top. You can also decorate these arches, too!

Now it’s time to add a pretend velvet inlay. We’re using tissue paper for ours. Cut a square of tissue and turning your crown upside down and taking care not to damage the arches, add some glue (or tape) to secure the tissue to the band of the crown. Gently stuff the remaining tissue inside the arches.

Finally, cut out a symbol, or pick a jewel to stick on top of where the two arches cross over and meet at the top of the crown. We have chosen a fleur de lys. This can be glued or stuck on with tape dependent on the shape or form.

Here’s a selection of crowns to inspire you but there’s no need to make the traditionally recognised crown shape. Try one of the many different styles of Spanish crowns or even a version of the Great Crown of Victory of The Kings of Siam!
Tip!
The decorations are great for fundraising at Christmas fairs and wrapped in colourful tissue make ideal presents.
